About me · Modern Holistic Psychiatry

Meet Francesca Rome-Marie, PMHNP-BC

Welcome to Modern Holistic Psychiatry, where unhurried time and attention meet the integration of body, mind and spirit.

I'm a board-certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner in New York. I built this practice to answer the fragmentation I saw in mental healthcare, both as a provider and as a patient: care that treats people as symptoms to manage rather than whole people with stories, histories, bodies and beliefs.

Why this practice exists

“Care begins with time. The time to understand, to listen and to notice.”

Too often, mental healthcare is split between rushed appointments and disconnected providers. Modern Holistic Psychiatry was created to bring the clinical and the personal back together.

The vision

How Modern Holistic Psychiatry came to be

Portrait of Francesca Rome-Marie framed like a strip of film

My path to psychiatry has never been a straight line, and I think that's exactly what shapes the care I offer today.

I honed my clinical skills at the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing, after years as a certified HIV specialist and primary care provider for the LGBTQIA+ community in Manhattan's Chelsea neighbourhood. I've always been deeply invested in the human experience, and committed to helping people feel genuinely cared for rather than processed.

My interest in holistic wellbeing began long before that, when I trained as a yoga instructor at the Integral Yoga Institute of New York, becoming the youngest certified instructor there at the time.

Philosophy, art and advocacy

At The New School, I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Gender and Sexuality Studies, immersing myself in feminist philosophy and psychoanalytic thought while exploring art and creativity through analogue film photography. That commitment to social justice led me towards sexual health and rights: I served the wider New York medical community as a gynaecological teaching associate and was involved in sex work activism.

Alongside this, I worked with the Harm Reduction Institute and the Anti-Violence Project, and became an on-call emergency room advocate for survivors of intimate partner violence and sexual assault at Beth Israel Emergency Department. Supporting the mental health and wellbeing of survivors remains close to my heart today.

A global perspective

Wanting to widen my impact, I earned a Master's in Disaster Management from the University of Copenhagen while volunteering with Danish Muslim Aid, coordinating aid projects across diverse regions. I also studied with the humanitarian Dame Claire Bertschinger, author of Moving Mountains, while completing a Certificate in Tropical Nursing at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

Just as I was beginning interviews with Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders), life took an unexpected turn. I chose instead to build a mental health practice that filled the gap I had experienced first-hand, as a primary care provider and as a patient. That is how Modern Holistic Psychiatry was born.

Somatic work became the missing link between talk therapy and psychiatric care.

One of the most transformative moments in shaping this practice was integrating somatic approaches. They connected my personal and professional experience of talk therapy with psychiatric and medical treatment, opening up a powerful way to work with the mind-body connection. Today it's a cornerstone of how I support people seeking a deeper understanding of their mental health and of themselves.

Why work with me

Where the clinical and the personal meet

At Modern Holistic Psychiatry, care begins with time: the time to understand, to listen and to notice. I created this practice as a space where prescriptions are given alongside reflection, and where we attend to what matters to you, not only to what's wrong.

If you've felt unseen or unsupported in traditional settings, or you're looking for care that honours complexity, curiosity and collaboration, you're in the right place.

How I work

No set script, just you

How we work together depends on what's happening in your life, your body and your story. Sometimes that means tending to the nervous system. Sometimes it means making space for grief. Other times it's about refining a prescription, or sitting with silence long enough for something true to emerge.

We move at a pace that honours your readiness while gently encouraging growth. Whether we're exploring trauma through somatic work, revisiting a prescription or making sense of a hard season, the work is always collaborative, thoughtful and led by what's meaningful to you.

Over time, this becomes a space where the parts of you that felt unseen or unspoken can come into the light, where you have room to surprise yourself, and where care meets the whole of who you are.

What I can help with

People come to me for many reasons

Some are considering medication for the first time. Others want a second opinion, or to revisit something that no longer feels right. Some are navigating complex emotions or life transitions; others are living with anxiety, depression, trauma or questions of identity and belonging. My work often supports people who are:

  • Seeking a first connection with a therapist or psychiatrist, and wanting to begin in a considered, deep way
  • Valuing a strong, long-term relationship with a provider who values the same
  • Feeling that parts of you were left out of therapy or psychiatry in the past
  • Exploring holistic and somatic therapy alongside, or instead of, medication
  • Feeling stuck in traditional talk therapy and wanting to reconnect with the body
  • Processing trauma or high-impact stress with care and precision
  • Needing a safe, relational space to understand yourself more deeply
  • Wanting a more integrated approach to mental health prescriptions

Wherever you are, we'll start from there. See everything I can help with.
